Skiing
Niseko offers the larger lift served ski area, with four resort zones across Mount Niseko Annupuri. Expect groomed runs, tree skiing, powder terrain, and controlled gate access. It is also the busier mountain, with queues common during peak weeks.
Furano Ski Resort covers roughly 194 hectares across two connected zones. Its terrain is well balanced, with approximately 40 percent beginner, 40 percent intermediate, and 20 percent advanced runs. It also offers ungroomed powder runs and a limited Premium Zone that opens when conditions allow. Lift lines are generally shorter, although queues can still form during peak periods.
Both resorts suit beginners, with magic carpet lifts, gentle base slopes, and established English language ski schools. For non skiers, there are onsen, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, tubing, and scenic gondola rides. Niseko’s activities, shops, and restaurants are concentrated around its resort villages. Furano combines its ski areas with attractions across the wider city, including Ningle Terrace and Furano Marché.
Atmosphere and Access
Hirafu moves quickly in the evenings, with restaurants and bars filling throughout the week. Furano combines a relaxed ski base with an established local city, surrounded by open fields and distant peaks.
Both destinations are roughly two to three hours from New Chitose Airport. Furano is also around one hour from Asahikawa Airport. Hirafu is relatively walkable for dining and nightlife. Furano’s restaurants and attractions are spread across several areas, so a car or shuttle can be useful.
Dining and Nightlife
Niseko’s concentrated resort scene offers an extensive international selection of restaurants and bars, particularly around Hirafu.
Furano’s dining scene is rooted in the local city, with restaurants spread between Kitanomine, central Furano, and the Prince Hotel area. It offers plenty to explore, although bookings and transport still require planning during winter.

Accommodation
In Niseko, Kira Kira places guests in the heart of Upper Hirafu, minutes from the slopes, with mountain views from selected apartments. For more space, Yukihyo, Boheme, and Gustav’s Hideaway suit groups wanting generous communal areas. Families are well suited to Puffin or Kitanishi 2 and Kitanishi 3, which can be booked together for larger groups.
Insider tip: Christmas, New Year, and February dates can fill 6 to 12 months ahead. Booking early usually provides the widest choice of properties and dates.
H2 Life’s Furano collection offers thoughtfully selected accommodation across Kitanomine and Nakafurano. Wildwood and the newly added Akayane Lodge provide calm, family friendly spaces surrounded by Furano’s natural scenery.
Opening for winter 2026/27, Lyra by Nozo becomes the first Furano property in H2 Life’s Luxury Collection. It offers configurations for couples, families, and larger groups, alongside a rooftop stargazing lounge and access to selected facilities at the neighbouring Nozo Hotel. These include its spa, sauna, gym, restaurant, bar lounge, and family facilities. Kitanomine Gondola is only a short walk away.

Niseko suits travellers who want choice, energy, and the resort itself to form part of the holiday. Its extensive international services make it especially easy to navigate for first time visitors.
Furano suits travellers drawn to quieter skiing, open landscapes, and a slower pace. Its combination of mountain access and local city life makes it an equally strong choice for a first Hokkaido ski trip.
